How to launch and auto/step?
#1
Ok no jokes please regarding launching an auto but seriously, I wanted to go do some 0-60 runs and got a little meter and all but never really have known how to launch an auto well like you can do on a stick.
I knew the old timers used to powerbrake and step on the brake, rev to 2k and then go from there-but do our cars hold up ok to "power braking" or whatever you call it? Am I missing something or is htere any good way to launch an auto other than just slamming the pedal down from a stop at 0rmps

brake-torque just as how you described it, rev to about 1500 - 2k. pretty much the only way to launch with step aside from just slamming the "go pedal."

Good to know since MAN the launch from a stanstill is just terrible! Again WHERE is the low end torque on these things!!!

Thanks a lot guys-that thread was great.
I was actually surprised, I went out and tried this last night and I have a 530 which is not very torque heavy or hp heavy, especially compared to the 550 yet at 2k rpms the tires spun a fair amount to the point where it definetly hurt the launch BUT was wayyy better than the basic "floor it" launch so there is definetly a lot more to this launching stuff than I had thought. So I tried 1.5 and still got some tire spin. Which is odd because I have brand new tires on.
So I think my optimal point will be around 1.5i-2ish and just have to learn to minimize the wheel spin
Good times though, man just flooring it from a stop was painful to launch, it was SOO slow it was painful!
Anyway thanks a lot!
Znod your posts inspired me to buy a g-meter and run my own tests on my 530 since nobody else had done so and mags reivewed the 530 even less than the 550 so there is like no info floating around regarding the 530s acceleration etc

You are very welcome. And, I am glad you got the meter. Post your times on the tread referred to above, and I'll get you started on weather and altitude adjustment--which you will want to do. You will need to do full 1/4's to use these techniques. Be sure your "strip" is flat and level. You can find an approximately level strip using your car's altimeter, but you'll need to perform the altitude measurements several times to get average start of 1/4 and end of 1/4 altitude measures.
