Changing the Cabin filter is just not going to cut it majority of the times. My advice, Dont change the cabin filter before you perform a complete a\c cleaning.
I had the same problem you have and boy did i HAVE to do a whole big procedure, if you want to save the trouble get it to the dealer who would do a better job if not here it is

Once again, attempt to change the cabin filter in hopes of solving the problem. If nothing helps then remove the cabin filter and do the DIY. If you keep the new filters on without cleaning the a\c system then bacteria would get on to your new filters as well.
Good Luck
Just for FYI, Toyota also has an a\c cleaner (Forgot what it is called but got it from the Toyota dealer). You could go and ask the dealer for it. It was the cheapest A\C cleaning spray I could find. Bought 2 of them and sprayed it in and it did the trick.
Thanks,

Anyone ever use this?
Description: "Within a short time (approx. 10 minutes) removes the unpleasant odors that are caused by bacteria and mold in air conditioning systems, ventilation ducts or vehicle interiors. Simple to use without removal of the pollen or dust filter. A pleasant, fresh fragrance lingers behind. Works to prevent allergic reactions."

I have a 2008 535XiT and had this issue 2 years ago. A/C system stinks when you start the car. Was at the Dinan shop, he knew about the problem and (for no charge) sprayed a conditoner in the system which fixed it. Car is still under wattanty, so when smell happened again I asked the BMW dealer to "fix" this under warranty, they wanted to charge me $140...I'll buy the can myself.
