when in the buying process for my car i asked about the high torque of the diesel and how it affected performance at speed. He said that it between 40-80 mph it would probably be as fast as a 545i. This seems a little far fetched to me! because the 525d is down considerably on horsepower and a little on torque. but the extra weight of the diesel engine means they both weigh nearly the same. i just wondered is this realistic or what would the performance be equivalent to realisticly? it certainly leaves boy racers in the distance!

probably slightly misleading sales talk but he may be referring to in gear acceleration (i.e. 40 to 80 with the car staying in 5th etc) where the torque of the diesel engine will definitely help - in gear acceleration is generally better on diesel than gas engines. For straight acceleration from 40 to 80, on anything other than same gear, the 525 won't keep up with a 545. Plenty of members on here have had the ECU remapped and that can make a lot of difference to a diesel - big gains in HP/torque. Overall the 525d should feel pretty quick though especially in town driving. Let us know how you get on.

Ask the dealer to join you on the highway to prove his claim - make sure you're in the 545i...

Well the official 50-75 in 4th the 530d (5.4) is quicker than the 545i (5.8). The 525d is a little behind (6.5) but matches the new (258PS) 530i. The 535d will leave them all standing on that increment However, that's just one measure and not 100% indicative of all speeds etc. The advantage of diesel is that the performance is accessible low in the rev range but once the petrol starts to rev the power kicks in.

I gave a Porsche 911 quite a surprise the other day from 30mph to 80mph. I 100% matched him but he started to pull away at the end once his revs kicked in He was not happy!

As always however, all this theory relies on your "opponent" staying in the right gear for you

yeah like i said i thought it was far fetched! what i do know though for instant overtaking power when you need it the diesels will have petrol power licked. i am very impressed with how eager this engine feels! There is quite a bit of delay when pulling out of roundabouts and junctions which causes the car to shoot forward!
things can only get quicker from now on! has anyone tried new performance diesel fuel from bp? does it make much difference?

I have seen a lot of remapping on 530d and 535d but not 525d.
Does anyone have had any experience with this?

I have tryed 525i and 530i and the feel of power in a 525d is better, but if you have and old software version you might have some lag from stationary.

What happens when you do a software upgrade in your car when its remaped? Will the remapping be overwritten?

A happy 525d owner in a country where taxes on cars are huge <_<
