Hey guys, its getting wintery here in scotland. I know there are lots of traction controls and stability things but how do i effectivly drive a rear wheel drive car in snow? it seems stupid asking but i want to make sure i am using the technolgy properly and i dont really want to get stuck either. thanks

Leaving it on would be good advice Unless you get stuck and need to spin the wheels...

If it's really wintery it's worth investing in 'proper' winter wheels/tyres...

What tyres sizes? I expect my 245 tyres will be really bad in snow. But then there was very little snow last year, so I didn't find out.

Traction control is the best I've driven, but 245 tyres on the 5er just isn't enough in the dry. (runflats are crap). Back end steps out too easily. Traction control goes mad in the wet. Snow is likely to make it frenzy I assume.

If it snows much, I'll wish I bought an Audi (quattro). Otherwise, the BMW is great. Interested to know how an E60 goes in snow. UK snow that is, on summer tyres.

I did yesterday to test my tires 230s... but then it started to rain hell man then came the snow so I wnet max 110-130 all the cars with summer tires...surfed out from the Autobahn.

when I take over or switch lane in snow or on ice never push hard on the gas, let it go over the point and keep full traction then when you feel that it is ok the car does not skid or slip step on it again, the DTC I wud leave on unless you want to go in circles I like it but only in open space enough like you car can turn around in 10m circle try there.

On the roads DRIVE SAFELY!!! No useless speeding, yesterday it was nite so I had 3 more lanes... if sg. unexpected happens. But BMW is fun to drive ... no offence but I prefer more my RWD than a X-drive.

(HANKOOK W300 ICEBEAR, I had Michlein SP2 on my previou scar but this is really GOOD)

The safest was to drive in the snow is to experience what might happen "driving on snow." I come from Houston, Texas, where snow or even ice are low occurences. But when I used to travel (business) in locations where snow and ice were present (Canada of course), I take the car (rental) out into a big empty parking lot. Then, I drive like mad and experience the "driving on snow" and test both the car and my limitations. That's it. Have fun and be safe at the same time.

Though, one time, I was in Lake Louise (sp) (night) and jumped the curb (full of snow, of course) toward the direction of the lake. Of course, the lake as hundreds of yards away.

I drive to the Alps for skiing couple times per winter so I bought another set of wheels with proper winter tires and do not have any problems driving on snow. The original Bridgestone runflats are completely useless. I had major difficulties when it was an inch of snow here in London. It is an expensive solution if you have a few days of snow-driving but bare in mind that winter tires are designed to work at low temperatures.

Which tires do you have? i have the goodyear NCT 5 R/F (summe cont) and so far they are fine. We had a bit of snow and lot of rain and still...i feel confi riding with them. So what is the BIG NO NO that people keep on posting about impossible to ride on the rain and snow with perfomance tires?

Thanks
