You must be a mostly city leadfoot? I average 20 - 21 MPG.
My lifetime average is about 17 mpg. The 11 mpg I got at the April 25th Bear Mountain Meet did not help the average. Me, leadfoot, never...

Somehow, I have a feeling that after this Saturday's Western NJ/ Poconos meet, my lifetime mpg will be more like 16.

The 530 is not in the same power class as the 550 -- just as my 550 is not in the same power class as the Beast. And obviously, there is a huge price gap.

How in the world you get mixed 22 mph for your 550. 25-26mph on a highway is realistic, but mixed driving is 16-17mph at best, 11mph for city driving.
My communte to work is about 12 miles one way. Within that commute I have about 60% highway and 40% in the city (stop lights, traffic etc...). Then during the week I do more city driving with a little highway driving. On my last tank of gas my MPG was 21.9 calculated. This tank of gas only consisted of going back and forth to work and some misc. city driving. My worst tank of gas was 19.1 calculated.

Well I do have a hybrid as a second vehicle so I've learned a few tricks on how to conserve gas The cops really crack down on speeding here so when I get on the highway I usually set the cruise at about 65 or 70 (speed limit being 55). There is always someone going faster then me so I never get bothered by the cops.

It won't be that much of a difference between 530 545 550 that you'll feel the pain it's not M5 guzzler. It'll be negligable difference lives too short to worry about the mpg difference of cost between 530 / 550. 530 M5 I'll give u that.

Stop! I'm trying to justify my 530 purchase while staring at 550's online and sobbing with grief for not getting a V8. Sigh..

Get the e9x M3, you'll get more top end power than the 550's!

hahaha I'm just curious if the OP was even near serious (btw I haven't read anything past the OP )

EDIT: OOOOOH, they don't have a 535 out there... well, OP, your 530s are 270 horses - that's still a lil' more than "a bit" less than the 550... if you were in the U.S., I'd say just get a 535, but... I don't know... all I can tell you is: I consider 530 and 550 to not even be in the same class. And I actually drive a 530, mate. So there's my 2 cents
he's too busy opening up new topics!

I have an expiring lease on a 530i, and I struggled with the decision over 530i and 550i.

I went with the 550i, and I am taking delivery in 4 weeks. Carbon Black, fairly loaded (including ventilated seats).

I thought about fuel economy. I drive 12,000 miles a year. Let's assume that the 530i gets 23 mpg, and the 550i gets 20mpg. The difference would be 80 gallons of gas per year.

At $3 gallon here in the states (which is much higher than the current price), that is $240.
If gas "skyrockets" to $5 gallon, that is $400 extra per year.
I think that I can handle the extra $400 after buying a $75k MSRP car.
I am not sure that I follow the arguments of those who worry about fuel costs and have stated here that we will all be "hurting." The difference right now between a hybrid Camry getting 30mpg and a 550i means $500 gas difference per year for 12k miles.

Exactly why I drive an M5. Even though I average 11mpg (and those are the big UK gallons), the actually cost difference isn't really that much especially in light of the overall cost of the car (depreciation, new rear tires every 20k, etc.)

I also disagree with the the "if you can afford a BMW argument..." I know lots of people with deep pockets who would not drive an 11mpg car because of the environment. I'm not one of them, but respect their decsion - it's not all about money.

Drive both cars and decide, but I would go for the 550. GL
