I have an E60 May 2005 (Navi Pro with DVD), and I 'm planning to update the iDrive software in order to make it able play mp3, the only thing is that the official dealer here in Riga can't guarantee that all of the blocks will work after the work. At the other hand some says that ussually this faults occured with the oldest models lik E60 03' and 04'.
Does anyone know anything on how the age of the car influence the result? And does it worth to take this risk?
BTW update will cost me 210EUROS without any guarantee (that's ridiculous)
Thanks in advance, any help will be appreciated.

Well if your car is capable of MP3 and you want it I would say go for it. If the dealer knows what they're doing it should be ok. there have been a lot of upgrades and for the most part people have reported positive results... but there have been problems before. So if you were upgrading just because you want the newest SW then NO, DONT DO IT.

I had two updates on my car without any problems... but last week i got a new battery with a higher capacity... they must configure it in the system and need to do a update... during this update the ccc have failed... the car was four days at BMW. After this experience i would never again update for goodies like a better graphic in the NAV... My car is from 2004 and a friend of me had also problems - maybe have the old ccc - problems during updates... but now i have a new one... :-) By the way, BMW had taken all costs for changing the ccc... the car is without warranty since 1/2 year...

So if the errors occur, who is normally responsible for them. Maybe I should check what the other dealers can offer me? Or Hawkeye74a's case was kind of exception?
