How to check Engine Temp for E60 (535i 2010)
 

Hi guys,

The 2 important function that should have a display gauge is the engine temp and the oil level but there is no gauge on my car to show the engine temp at all and there is no dipstick to check my level oil. In the iDrive only show the oil level is ok. it does not tell you exactly what it like others have dipstick. Is there any place else showing the engine temp? I'm little concern about this cuz I live in a dam hot state in the summer time.

Get a JB4. Not only will it safely transform your car's performance, it includes a ton of extra nice-to-have features as well. For instance, you can easily hijack the stupid economy gauge in the instrument cluster and turn it into one of several useful gauges, including a water temp gauge. And the best part is it can all be changed on the fly using the volume and channel buttons on the steering wheel.

Monitoring a coolant temperature gauge in a 535i is not very useful unless you are very familiar with the various temp maps the system is managing. Normal is between 194 to 226 deg. The engine runs hottest under low loads to get the highest mileage because of lower friction and runs cooler under high loads to improve cylinder filling and increase torque. The different modes are
226 deg. = economy
219 deg. = normal
203 deg. = high mode
194 deg. = high mode in conjunction with map thermostat

Most drivers would not read or understand the temp gauge in a meaningful way.

Regarding the dipstick, I got over it a long time ago.

Thanks for posting that info -- wasn't aware that there are four different modes. Does BMW do that with all models/engines that have electric water pumps?

going back to post #3 in this thread - has anyone with an early build ('04, '05) car had any luck with this? I could get my cluster to accept the code and allow me to scroll to all of the various sub-menus, but I couldn't get it to actually display engine temp for me.

Yes. Mine is an '04. Once it accepts the code, just scroll through to menu 7. You don't have to go to any submenus. It will show coolant temp. Then start the motor without turning the ignition off. I tried to do this with the motor already running, and it didn't go well. Kept tossing me out.
