As the title suggests, I'd like to get your input on how to care for a new gearbox. My 530d had its gearbox replaced under warranty last Friday after issues like the ones discussed here, and I'm now reeeeaaal keen on figuring out how to ease it into life.
My SA recommended gradual acceleration and decelleration for a couple of days to let the 'box work through each and every gear in sequence as it shifts up and down, but no other restrictions. I take his point, but am not sure this is all I need to do while it beds in (or does it even need to??). I have thus far been doing the following, in addition to what the SA said:
1. Not revving above 2,000 rpm when trying to take off.
2. Keeping my speed to a max of 100km/h (60mph).
3. When parking, shifting into "N", applying handbrake to let the handbrake take the weight of the car, and only then shifting into "P".
I'm thinking of doing 1 and 2 above for 500km (300 miles) or so before starting to give it serious welly again.
- Is this wise or overkill?
- Is there anything else I should be doing/not doing?
- Is there any advice/guidance on how to treat the thing at traffic lights (move into "N" or keep standing on the brakes)?

But the 545i also has less torque than the Diesel...
Not sure if this really helps:

I would have thought you should drive the same way as when you get a new car.
In response to the items you wrote:
1. OK, makes sense
2. I would say 120kph (Dutch max speed) is also fine -- I think its more important how you get to that speed than the speed itself
3. Never heard of that before, but could see the logic. If it you can remember to do it, why not hey?!
I think the general rule is do not stress it for the first part of its life -- 500km or maybe 1000km seems sensible to me.
However I heard the best place to run it in is Munich

I saw #3 on another thread on here, and it made lots of sense - put the car in P and come off the brakes and you will feel the car roll a fraction of an inch before it settles. Someone on the forum suggested that you'd be better off letting that final settling happen on the handbrake rather than the transmission lockup in "P".
Pete: running it in in Munich sounds like a grand idea, but the idea of driving the 830km from here to there like a granny does not appeal, especially when about half that route is on de-restricted autobahn!! I'm driving like a granny now, and it's driving my blood pressure up
