You need to ask your dealer.

They can't tell from the VIN, but when they log on to the cars OBC they can see what software version you have.

AFAIK yes. But I would give them a call first, maybe they do know...

OTOH, there were several threads about the software updates and what they fix. So if you do a search you'll find those and then you might be able to determine yourself what software version you have, since there are some things fixed, or not.
Version 12 in example allows the programming of the BOTH programmable buttons on the steering wheel. If you can only program one you don't have version 12...

I have had one software upgrade, back in May. The invoice says "Update and recode vehicle with CIP 11.2. Both of my programmable buttons on the steering wheels work fine - one turns on/off music & one turns off idrive screen. I don't have version 12. FYI

I believe that cars without NAV had the ability to program both buttons prior to version 12.
I have 11.2 without NAV and can program both.
I buddy has 11.2 with NAV and can only program one.

That's true.

The diamond button was locked onto "repeat last nav instruction" in version 11.x.

In version 12, they (thankfully) allowed us to change it.
