I'm not sure what price difference you're looking at between your choices but when I went for my 530i, I decided to go for 06 - I somehow have this belief that the earlier models have more gremlins and I think older versions had less items as standard. At the time the new 272bhp engine wasn't avalaible making my decision easier. If you wait a couple more months you may be able to pick the later 06/07 versions for less.

I have owned a 2004 530 and a 2006 530. The main differences to me:
1. Engine - the 2006 engine feels much smoother and more refined to me
2. Bluetooth - my 2004 530 didn't have Bluetooth sync with my phone, which drove me crazy.
3. Reliability - I have had much less problems with my 2006 than the 2004. I typically stay away with the first year production on a redesigned model.
Given my experience, I would definitely recommend the 2006 if you can afford it.

In my opinion, it's not the options/hp but rather the bugs in 04-05 that you should stay away. Those car tend to get more problems and eventually, cost you more to own in 2-3 years down the road than the newer 06-07 without bugs. I have been in the market for quite awhile and with me, even those with production date before 11-06 aren't worth looking at.
