what is it for? does it do anything? seems to just be a hollow fob.

My Ride: 2007 530i. RPI Scoop, BMC Filter, 17 light LED upgrade. blacked out roundels on trunk, hood, steering wheel, rims. 6000k HID bulbs and 6000k HID fogs. MTEC V2.1 AE's. Euro stickers
Yeah its an emergency key incase you lose your primary key fob. when you bought your car, they should have given you a black plasctic key, you insert that into the hollow key fob to start your ride.

If you were not provided with a manual for your BMW visit the information section of this forum and download an easy to search copy. I know someone already gave you an answer but you might want more details .....
