I know the damage is minor, but that's not my point. We have many shops here that can fix it, I want to go to my shop but I have to go to his because I have no other options.

If it was in a private car park did you check other cars for damage and find out who it was?

Did he have a valid license?
The police found him and made him contact me so I have his number.

I just took the car in now, should have it back on Thursday.

That's why I took it in asap.

So he broke the law by drinking and driving, then broke the law by having no insurance, then broke the law by fleeing the scene, lol this guy sounds like a real winner. Sorry to hear about what happened to you, situations like this why I will always have full coverage on my Bimmer. You just never know what can happen and there's so many people out there with no insurance. Hope everything works out for you, and hope this douche gets what is coming to him.

I have fully comprehensive insurance on my car, but why should I claim on that and then have my insurance cost go up next year?

The only other option was to wait 6 months and claim through some Insurance Fund scheme for situations like these.

I hope the police charge him for the driving offences.

Well, not sure how it works out there, but here in the states, your insurance wouldn't go up.

I have had two hit and run experiences with my other car, and both times my car was hit, and AAA paid it with no issue at all. If I have to rake my memory, the two combined incidents probably amounted to nearly $10k even though it was just dents and scratches.

And my insurance was still the same.

Over here, like in the UK I believe, if you make a claim your premium will go up.
