Hi, I have searched all sorts of key word combinations for my little problem, but I don't think any of the answers apply to my case.
My car will be going in for some unrelated, minor issues and I would like to bring up to the SA that there is a high pitch whine that follows the engine revs, upshifts and downshifts. The whine is there with or without the A/C on and we just can't locate the exact source. It seems to be coming from the general area of the middle of the console but we can't determine whether it's outside or inside of the car.
If anybody has experienced this noise and has found a solution, it would be greatly appreciated if you could please post here so that I may bring it up to the SA. The first time I brought this up (about 6 months ago) I was told that it is the air hitting the plastic intake boxes outside and that it is normal operating condition. Is this true?
Thanks for any advice the membership may offer.

know what this is. It's called alternator whine.
Typicall this happens in cars with ugraded sound systems or some kind of sound system change.
More likely in your case if you haven't changed anything it will be a grounding issue which is causing static interferance. It could also be a sign of a bad battery/alternator since the charge or electrical demand cannot be kept.
In my case this happen in my Honda civic when I added a car pc. I had very bad whine coming out of the car. I fixed this by blocking it out using a supression filter on the sound system.
Just thinking about I'm not sure if BMW have a suppression filter or not but if the do they could have gone bad

... maybe some random hoodlum decided to break into your garage and install a supercharger. Just a thought.

I have this same whine. It sounds like it's coming from the right front of the car, but I haven't had enough time to debug it or bring it into the dealer.
It isn't the turbos, because it happens even at stoplights. Do you manually shift all the time? I've noticed that if I'm at a light (and the whine is going on), moving the lever to the right will stop it.... for a little while. Eventually (30 seconds or so) it comes back.
