End result of this is that at night when driving in manual mode out in the sticks where the police radar isn't, the hand you need to use to turn off the high beam is the same one that you need to change gears with. End result is usually the oncomming car cops a face full of high beam as you quickly lift your hand from the gears to the hi beam switch.

My Ride: '05 545i - scheduled for ED pickup in Munich on 7/22!
does high beam assist have any other features besides turning on/off the high beams depending on oncoming traffic?
if no, i might actually prefer doing it myself...keeps me awake on desolate dark roads by forcing me to stay active.

On my 68 Camaro as well as countless other 60's-70's cars, the high beam uses a foot switch...how funny is that
...maybe they should go back to it?

The theory behind this is that BMW want you to drive around with your High Beam on as default, unless you cannot which is when it shifts down to low beam. They claim that its a safety feature because people do not use their High Beam enough to increase visiblity when it is safe to do so. Its the complete opposite of how we think of the lights today where you switch to High Beam if you need it.

My Ride: My 1st was an '06 530xi, Titanium Silver w/ gray dakota leather, sport pkg. & Nav.
Now my 2nd is an '08 650i CP, Space Gray, Blk Dakota, Sprt. Auto, HUD, Sprt. Pkg., Prem. Sound, High Beam Ast. & Comfort Access
My father's 70's era Caddy had the auto dimming feature. It did not work very well but was cool none the less. I also grew up in the days when you dimmed your headlights with the foot switch. It worked well on auto transmissions but could cause problems with a manual.
For around $80 I will give it a try on my next BMW if the reviews are generally good.

havent tried it out yet, as it is bright light still all day long. (no gremlins here, no)
I didnt order it with mine, but got it anyway. Its in the idrive menu and its probably another bullshit thing which you wont need.

Also you have to remember to switch it on and the only way to switch it off to put the level to manual High beam and then bring it back, which means you've just blinded the person in front of you for no reason.
