Seems like it's mostly a computer-controlled function and maybe a light sensor located somewhere near the front of the vehicle?

Is it possible to add this functionality to an 04/05 model?

Dont bother with this function at all. Its not worth the factory option price of 95GBP let alone the cost of a retrofit. I'd take it out of my car and give it to you free if I could.

Ditto - it's useless. It doesn't activate high beam in many of the places that I normally would, and either deactivates it too early (reflections from signs/etc), or if there is a slight bend in the road it doesn't "see" the oncoming cars and blinds them.

The happiest moment with my new E60 was finding out this function could be disabled in iDrive - I thought I was going to have to go back to the dealer to have them remove it !!

Yeah. I prefer the "Manual" Option:
When I can't see what's out there --> Turn on the high beam
When I get "The Finger" or someone high beaming me back --> I guess I better turn off the high beam.

I recommend spending your money on something else.

Actually I found it very useful in long stretches of Bundesstra?e driving when the roads were not well lighted and a car would come in the other direction maybe a few times an hour.

But it?s useful only in limited circumstances.

Thank you to all who provided feedback. I guess it sounds better on paper than it actually is in reality. I use my highbeams as often as I can and find it to be a PIA to flick them on/off every time another car approaches. Maybe they'll get it right in V 2.0?

It's actually a very small camera module, integrated in the rear view mirror housing. I have one of those mirrors on the shelf here, and I already wondered why it would work at all as the resolution is very low and the lens is just very simple and cheap. The processing of the camera signal is done inside the mirror itself, which sends out the high/low beam advice to the light computer (behind the light switch) through a CAN bus.

I wouldn't spend money it, there are so many other, more useful options you can get.

well i foundit usefull as i live in the country with sharp winding roads, when you have to dip,ion a bend.it seems very good on my car 99% time.
only bad point is reflective road signs.
i will miss on next car as its not on the list.
by the way my wife loves it.
almost a reason not to have........
