My wife just drove my car home and noticed a severe hesitation while accelerating on my 535 xi. When my wife started the car after sitting outside all day, she could smell gas. To get up to to speed she had to floor it but was not getting acceleration. The car did not throw any codes but it is shifting erratically. It hit 6000 rpm just trying to get up to 40 mph. Merging on the highway, the car had to be floored to merge to get up to regular pace and it hit 6,000 rpm.

The car has had the hpfp replaced and the fuel injectors too. I just took the car for a spin and it is behaving fine. WTF?!? Does anyone have any idea or any idea how to pursue this problem? I don't want the car to crap out on the highway!

My '08 535 acted very similar before the check light came on and reduced power message in the drive.
It turned out to be the hpfp. So look for the check engine light to come on soon.

That is what I am fearing - I have already had an HPFP and fuel injectors replaced.

Same gas as always - Shell 93 - gas tank is half-way empty.

Yeah I think it is an pre-hpfp issue!

the cats plugged up?

This board is shocking-tells you why the net is such a bad place for advice-like seriously-that is about the 2000th thing on the list of possiblityies-I would think of 1999 other more plausible reasons.

But hate to tell you it IS the hpfp-sad thing is bmw wont touch it until its a CEL and in limp mode or throws a code-so its like russian roulette-drive drive drive bam-gone. Then you are stuck towing it or limpin it to the dealer.

Personally I wouldnt wait and would take it in and complain of this-if your lucky a code may have been stored in the DME but no CEL light is on-sometimes the cel light goes on and off quickly if the car compensates ok but the code is thrown and stored and it will show if they plug it into the computer.

1 hpfp---most owners average 3 replacements so you are not eve near there yet-expect this twice more in the next year

Well I took the car in after experiencing the same problem today. I will keep you all updated. It is a real pitty as the car is such a gem otherwise. I have a hunch it is HPFP related too... makes me wonder at which stage the car would be eligible for a buy-back.

Its the HPFP issue. I had two loaner 335i's with the same problems you describe (erratic shifting and power delivery). When I returned the latest one (to get my 530i back) back to the dealership, I told them about the problem. The response? "Don't worry about it, it happens ALL the time" with a great big smile. The car had 25k miles (probably a 2010), and it seemed obvious this wasn't the first HPFP this car went through.
