Hesitates then lurches when cold

When I start the car after it has been sitting for a while (when it is cold), I put the car in gear and it hesistates for a moment - not a long time, but a hesitation nevertheless - and then lurches forward. For example, I get in my car after work, back out of my space (in reverse, it is fine) then shift to D and it hesitates for that moment. As I get to the end of the driveway and wait for traffic to clear, it continues to momentarily hesitate and lurch when I take my foot off of the brake. I move out into traffic, the car warms up, and it is fine...

I have 22k miles on the car. Have had this issue for several months. Any thoughts? Thanks

This is not unusual behavior. The E60 has it's quirks on the transmission when the engine is cold. You will get used to it and after a year or two, it'll become second nature. If you start getting slamming noises, then it may be worth asking your SA for the tranny update though I think your vehicle should not have this issue given it's a 2008 model.

I have the same thing periodically with my 6MT. More like a bucking sensation.

I usually just let off the gas, let it coast, and like you said, after a minute or two it's all clear.

High Pressure Fuel Pump.

Another common link between our cars is the TT engine which had issues with this fuel pump failing.

High Pressure Fuel Pump. There are known issues with the HPFP. The members on this forum with the TT6 can give a better description of this issue.

I've owned plenty of cars with M/T's and never had this problem. Either the gears mesh when you shift or they don't.

THe HPFP is a known problem, but may not be the issue here. Regardless, I would schedule an appointment with an SA for a better look.

These transmissions are ridiculous. I've had Pontiacs that shift better than the E60. Definitely the weakest link on an otherwise wonderful car.
