I never owned an E39 but I believe the issue with the E39 LCD's and other earlier BMW's was that the pixels would burn out. This just looks like the readings shifted up not that they burnt out. Notice how the letter P isn't really missing pixels but should just be lower in the screen.
The gas pump, the line that seperates the odometer and the small "mls" above the line appear to be in the correct position.
It doesn't make sense but maybe the readout uses something like the HUD, a reflective mirror, and it somehow got misaligned...

And now that I really look at it are those even pixels? Maybe that screen uses something similar to the HUD displays...

On E38/39, the pixels did NOT burn out, but rather the contacts between ribbon cable connecting cluster to display would fail. The fix for those cars is to replace the ribbon cable (aftermarket), but it is easier said than done.

I agree that the first thing to try is a hard reset by disconnecting battery. Next would be to do a cluster test/reset (do a search to find out how) and see what shows up.

Had an identical problem with the LED display on my aftermarket head-unit. Replacing the ribbon cable with one I sourced from Ebay did the trick.

From my past experience - I wouldn't recommend tearing into in instrument cluster unless I either knew what I was doing or didn't care if I tore it up.

This happened to me once on an old E53 X5, it's ridiculously expensive to get repaired, so we never fixed it!

Thanks Dave, I am still trying to investigate what it would cost. It may be cheaper to get a good used M5 cluster from eBay, then just code it for my car (Simon can do it).
