You may be lucky. It sounds to me like it is just the brake light/interlock sensor. I am not sure because some cars use a simple switch off the brake peddle and others use a pressure switch on the mater cylinder to detect brake activation. If BMW uses the latter, your "pumping" may have cleared a stuck open sensor and allowed the car to start.
I have an SMG car that won't start. Normally you leave it in gear along with the parking brake when you shut it off so it won't roll. When you start it you must put foot on brake, shift into neutral and then turn key. Well I can move the shifter but it is not going into neutral or reverse, it stays in 1st gear. It also only indicates 1st gear even if you move the shifter. Another problem is when I called BMW Assist and they sent a flat bed they could not put it on because they need neutral to get it onto and off of the bed. I was told to call my dealer in the morning to send a tech to the car.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem is?
6:30pm- My dealer called, they said they PUMA'd this. They did not find any error codes and the normal suspect parts (brake switch, TCM etc) checked out OK. BMWNA asked if I may have lingered in the car after shutting it off with my foot on the brake pedal. They said thay have had a number of cases where undue built up brake pressure prevented the brake from actuating properly and prevented the startup. I remember shutting off the car and getting out but who knows. They asked if I wanted to leave the car until Monday and they will continue to try to duplicate the issue (They have Saturday service hours) but I decided to take the car back and hopefully it won't happen again.
Not a warm and fuzzy feeling, but I did really enjoy driving it back home.

What a terrible situation you had to experience.
I was actually relieved that you were able to take the car home. I never like when my car stays at a mechanic's garage...bmw dealer or not, it makes no difference to me.
Thank goodness for this forum is all I can say.
