Oh my goodness -- you are all so wonderful! Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses and ideas and kind words! The links were quite helpful and I am going to examine that very carefully to see if I can do it -- I do like the suggestion of buying him the kit and letting him do it!

In any case, if you decide to go forward with the project, post the last 7 digits of your VIN or the build date of your car and I will tell you the part number of the interface that you need and where you can get it. The installation is not difficult, but it involves removing your CD changer and could cause error codes on your car if you make a mistake.

If I were you, I would just buy the interface and give it to your husband for Christmas along with the DIY instructions. He will probably enjoy the project!
I will look the vin and get back to you on this - thank you!

Y'all are awesome!

My parents got all three of our Lexuses serviced at Westmont/McGrath Lexus and the Bimmer is from Westmont BMW and we've never had a problem with either of the dealers. They're all on the same road, Ogden, of course in Westmont where there's the strip of dealers. If I'm not wrong, it's to the left of the MB or the Lexus dealership. Maybe Audi, I dunno. But check with them as well.

Rosalind, I have tears in my eyes as I read this (not really ). You sound like a thoughtful and considerate wife. I hope your husband appreciates you because you sound like a great wife. All the suggestions above are sound, but buying the kit for him and letting him do the work would probably be a good thing, especially if your husband likes to tinker with cars and if you are not comfortable doing the same. Whatever you do, I am sure that your husband is going to be happy on Christmas morning. Take care and best wishes for a Merry Christmas to you and family.

Rosalind, I can recommend KNAUZ BMW, in Lake Bluff. It is the only Dealer in Chicago area that I would service my car. Regarding installation, I can give you a name to talk to for a price. Let me know.

I agree with the consensus, you are an amazing wife, and those of us who are married wish that our significant others were a little more like you. That said, the DIY idea of the install is probably the best. It is a fun project whenever you get to mod your car yourself, I get a lot of satisfaction from doing things myself and I seem to feel more connected to the car. Good luck

I have an idea. Maybe this could be a project for the both of them, in the garage, heated and wearing only shorts. That would be interesting.
