If you were forced to pull over (due to some issue like a flat tire) on some dark roadway and the parking lights were needed (in addition to the hazards) to give other drivers advanced warning that you're there (so you don't get killed) and the car turned the lights off to "help you out" and not drain your battery, you'd probably be complaining that such an intelligent car with all those sensors, yada yada, wasn't smart enough to protect you or the car as long as possible while you waited for help! Also, don't forget to consider that if you had to temporarily abandon your car in such a dangerous position, there's a chance that the (innocent) driver of the vehicle that ends up slamming into your car is killed or injured. Would you be fine with that as long as you didn't have a dead battery when you returned?

Sorry, Rudy, I totally respect you and thank you for everything you do here in the forums, but ... that's a stretch, man.
"What if you need to keep on the lights for a really, really, really long time?" The default should be that they shut off when the battery is becoming low OR that they stay on via an option in iDrive for as long as possible, battery be damned OR that the driver/owner (who paid mucho money for the car) already has his or her preference selected in iDrive to begin with vs. trying to remember it as they walk away with the gas tank in hand or whatever, IMHO. Logic is as logic does ...
I could come up with ten stories/scenarios on my own to describe why the battery should not be allowed to be drained completely for the safety of the driver, all related to the hazards of being stranded anywhere at any time of the day or pitch of night.

To the OP, don't you have jumper terminals under the hood? Both the UK E60s I've had have them, so there's no need to actually connect the charger / jumpleads to the battery.

My Ride: 07 BMW 525i Premium Package, Xenon Lighting Package, manual Transmission. Titanium Grey, 20% Tint around the back, 70% V-Kool on front.
Planned mods: Style 71 wheels with Toyo Proxy 4 tires, Sachs suspension upgrade, upgraded stereo, and many more to come.
for my model, if i leave the head light settings to auto, the halos will turn off once the driver's door is opened.
but let's say if i leave the car running, go out and grab something, and then turn the car off by opening the passenger door, the halos stays on. i am not sure if it will turn off at a set time, but i always go back to the driver side and open the door so the halos turn off.
