Wicked,

Take my advice, I have been dealing with snow for a long time living in Calgary, Alberta and now in Vancouver. DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR. I go to Whistler every weekend in the winter and use my wifes XC90. The roads are kept up very well here, but you will always hit pot holes and the summer tire thing is not a good idea. If it even snows an inch or there is loose slush, you are screwed. Even this morning it was 1 celcius with light rain and it felt like I was driving on butter. I have just dealt with this over the last 2 weeks because we had lots of snow. When it snows I head to Budget or Hertz and rent a car for $30 bucks a day, I would much rather put a Ford Focus in the ditch than my 550. As well, if you get in an acciident and you don't have the proper tires, there is a good chance your insurance will stick you with 100% fault. Chains are for not worth the bullshit, and always wondering if your fender is going to get torn off, don't laugh, I saw it last week.

Just my 2 cents

aboard. This is what makes this board great; the brotherhood, the genuine desire to help others with their questions, except of course, when I ask the question... I still don't know why P/S fluid squeaks.

Hello all,

I'm going to big bear in a couple of days (hopefully taking the long route to avoid using chains) and I had a couple of questions. But first my car is a 2004 525i w/sports package and I put 20 inch chromes on it (thats why I dont want to use chains). Questions:

1) Is 1 day in the snow going to hurt my car (i heard the salt on the road could damage it), but it ifs o.k. do you recommend when I bring it home to pressure wash all of the wheels, rotors, etc...?

2) Should I push the DSC or DTC button on my way or just when I'm stuck in snow (I dont understand how to use in snow)
I know I should use snow tires but this may be a 1 time deal thing

3) Any other advise?

Thanks so much for your help, oh and yeah, god I love this car!
1. no, winter weather won't hurt your car
2. if you are stuck with 20" summer tires, DTC is not going to help! Leave DSC on, it will keep you out of the ditches.
3. don't take this trip with 20" summer tires, invest in winter tires, rent a car with winter tires, or find a friend with winter tires to drive. There is a common theme here. sorry if this sounds harsh...but you did ask

I can't agree more. Rent a car, or take a different one. Im from Edmonton where there is snow on the roads for 7 months of the year, and I wouldnt dare to drive with 20's on, even for a day.

Then agian, im not sure what that roads are like, let alone where big bear is lol.
if the roads are clear and there is no snow in the forcast you should be fine.

It's not just the snow - but the temperature too..

Winter rubber was developed to keep it's traction in colder weather - summer rubber was not.

Your summer tires will turn hard as rock in colder clime and you won't need any snow for em to suck and endanger you and others..I hope you got a plan b.

Lol, that was funny. I checked road conditions and there wasnt any snow on the roads so I took the e60. I just wish I had DSC and DTC because I was sliding (and falling) all over the place (first time skiing). This car took the roads like I was superglued to it. I think I had more fun driving Thanks e60
