Thanks for the suggestion, tried that but the sound is on if the a/c is on or off.

You went to Crevier? Then you're in the OC? I would suggest talking to member Healthservices, he's a good mechanic and might be able to help you out. Send him a PM.

I am getting no CEL light, car drives fine and MPG is fine.. the ticking sound usually comes after the car is completely warmed up, and when in gear and accelerating or revving in neutral. It is engine speed dependent, so the faster the engine revs the more ticking sounds I get..

Let me know if any of you guys have any insight! greatly appreciated..
try this little tick i learned in high school auto shop( back in1978 ) get a piece of wood 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch 18 to 24 inch long.. ( wood has an excelent transfer of sound ) round of one end, put that end on ur ear and the other end touch any part of the engine,,
ull be amazed at how the internal engine sound travel thru the stick..hoefully that will help u pin pont the ticking noise..

another is to take a piece of radiator hose, like 3/4 diameter or so, and stick one end on your ear. use the other to probe where the sound comes from. works pretty good.

Tried a stethoscope today with a local shop, and sound seems to be coming from the middle of the passenger bank.. so they think its VANOS / valvetrain related. Still get no CEL lights, only hear it when car is completely warm. I've put about 1000 miles on it since i've first noticed it.

Which makes me think.. all the lifter and valve issues from most BMWs are from cold starts and sounds go away when warm.. I wonder if I have an exhaust leak like someone mentioned earlier in this thread.

Thanks for all the contributions so far! Really appreciate it keep the suggestions coming!
