I love the M5. I drove my uncle's M5 many times. It truly is a beast of a car. Unfortunately, he had so many problems with it that he had to get rid of it. Computer issues, tranny problems, etc. He said that it was in the shop more than any car he has ever had and he has had tons of cars. He traded it in for a Porsche 911 turbo and couldn't be happier.
NOTE: His M5 was the first production year, so his problems may be due to the first year "bugs"
I passed on an 06 for the same reasons. Also, didn't like the tranny or the gas mileage.

This sounds oh so familiar.

See if this recent thread of mine helps you out!! I agonized over the decision myself. I still think I am agonizing!!!

Then make up your mind. I have to admit, once you've driven "The Beast" it's hard to drive anything else, but do what's right for yourself!

And if it's the bad choice afterwards, then you can beat yourself over the head for the remainder of your purchase contract....or you just sell it sooner. I don't have that option with a lease.

Well, decision made and the head has won!

I've done some soul-searching and some number-crunching and decided that my 530D is staying in my drive - it's a great car and my other half is very attached to "Hippo" as she calls it (apparently both the colour and autofold mirrors remind her of a hippo )

However much I love the the M5, my bank balance needs more love and the M5 fuel costs look just astronomical compared with the frugal 530D.

Many thanks for all the input

Apropos this discussion... there are tons of deals to be had right now on M5s and other premium used performance cars (at least in the US)...

Not the best time to throw money about, but if you have it... the prices and deals may never get better.

As proof to this statement, I got my initial cap cost price reduced to $10K under sticker (with BMW $1450 bash back incentive), and that figure didn't include any cap reduction on my part. That means I "got it" for $3200 under dealer cost which is about $2400 under dead invoice. Good deal if you can still afford it...

I am glad you are at rest with your "HEAD" decision!

I am driving an M5 BECAUSE of the price of gas! End of an era imo and last chance to drive a beast like this. When gas is $15 a gallon I will look back fondly on my days of driving an M5 around in the era of cheap $5/gal gas.
