my gut says there is nothing wrong with the engine. did you see the smoke/vapour in the video? how can we explain this?
does sound like something came loose turbo...

just so you know, I imagined to be completely unrelated so didn't mention. the downpipe or cat has a broken brachet and there is always a rattle. in fact, of course i should have mentioned this as you may hear an element of this. Around 6 months ago we got a weld done to escape paying lots of money for a new pipe but it came loose again about 1 month ago.

if you were to take the steam train sound effects out and the rattley exhaust, the engine would sound pretty decent.

Just to add, i'd definately say it's diesel vapour as i was able to put my head right beside the engine to try identify where the sound was coming from. if it was smoke i'm sure i wouldn't have been able to breath.

cheers

Not sure what your statement is here but it`s not very helpful anyway.

Im thinking cracked or leaking inlet manifold.

My money is on an injector related fault like an injector seal. The "chuffing" noise you're hearing is the compression gas passing the seal and pushing all the unburnt (no compression = no ignition) diesel vapour with it.

all i'm trying to say is, the engine at the moment goes chooft chooft chooft like a steam train. also there is an exhaust rattle that has been there for some time. if it wasn't for this sound and as long as you rev high enough, the engine seems pretty normal. that's all.

You need to get the car to a mechanic pronto and get the fault codes read..

It could be an injector related issue, but the puffing train goes when you give it revs? I would say this points to a cracked / loose (if the rattle was there for some time) intake manifold although Vista could be right and the issue is just sped up so less noticeable at higher revs. Either way I would not drive it much more then you have to, get it to a specialist on a low loader if you're with the recovery service and get them to read the fault codes...

If your handy with a spanner and feel like wipping the manifold off Anzafin has posted an excellent DIY on swirl flap removal you can use....

Guys, it is indeed the inlet manifold.

Q1. Is there a chance that this can break without going into engine? The mechanic can't promise anything but he thinks in this occassion we have been lucky and all we need to do is replace the manifold.

Q2. Apart from ebay where am i best finding an inlet manifold? the price to beat is £420, that's the trade price my mechanic sourced.

Q3. Can these flaps be removed from the new/second hand unit and if so what are the consequences.

again, thanks for all your input.

Sorry to hear.

A1: When a swirl flap breaks, it has no other way to go than the piston/cylinder --> damages on piston and valves (-->diesel fumes) at least
A2: Sorry don't know
A3: Yes they can be removed safely and there is no real consequences. Read the whole thread behind the link that I gave earlier for more accurate information about the issue
