I got in my 2004 525d this morning and went to drive to work as normal. Low end power is fine, but top end is gone! Nothing seems odd about the car otherwise, no smoke or anything. I can't hear the turbo whistle when I try to accelerate past 3000 RPM.

Has my turbo blown? Could it be something simple?

There are no warning lights on the dash, other than a reminder for the annual service.

Help!

If there's no smoke, its probably not the turbo.
Many other things still to eliminate though.

Sorry, don't know but it looks like you may have to go to the dealer for this one.

Is this engine sequentially turbocharged using two turbos like the larger diesel? If so, you might have lost the turbo used for higher RPMs.

Hello,
The 525D is single turbocharged, but how many Km or Miles got your car ?
Is the maintenance overdue & for how many Km / Mls ?
Does the turbo whistle also at low RPM when the engine is cold ?

The car has 98,000 miles on the clock, but has been dealer serviced and stamped from new. I used to get a whistle from the turbo when cold, and even did after it had lost its top end power. It's going in tomorrow, but I thought I'd see if anyone had experienced the same issue and could offer an easy solution...!

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy,
On a previous car, this problem let to a turbo change (2003 E46-320D) after 150000 Km.
I don't see any easy solution so far, but of course, it's only my opinion.
I sincerely hope it's just a stupid stuff and that your worries will be solved at low cost.

Keep us informed.

Cheers.

Etienne
