I am having intermittent static problems coming from my radio/cd at random times.
I went to BMW and they said its probably the TCU that needs replacement which is $1500 with labour.
Do I really need to spend this much?
Can I make this cheaper somehow?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Don't do it. $1500 for that is crazy. You buy the part from eBay (used) or Garry at Newport BMW (brand new) for less. And install it yourself. It's simple plug and play.
What model year is your 5er?

That's what our guy did, otherwise I would not have paid that much for it!

Not really sure, they just told us that they were going to comp it. He told us it was $1000 for the part and that they were going to comp it. We bought all 3 of our BMW's from them though. Sorry that I couldn't have been any more help.
What you can do is maybe haggle the price with them?

Were you having the static problems with your audio just like me? Is that why you replaced the tcu?
Yeah I was, I would be driving a few minutes listening to the radio, and then the static came and I couldn't get it to stop. It was completely random.

Do you have static on the CD and the radio or just the radio? And when you say TCU do you mean the telematics control unit ( phone/ communication module ) ? I am trying to see how they are related to each other.
