Hey guys,This morning (about 12 minutes ago) I started up my car and it began running really rough. I decided not to move in fear of damaging it more but then she died while idling and followed by the check engine light (the useless yellow symbol). Another few clues I notice is a heavy gas smell from the exhaust (what probably triggered the check engine light) and for the past 100 miles I had the "service due " warning but I was waiting for the weekend to get service.
Now I think it is a spark plug/piston misfire issue, but can anyone chime in
2010 535xi approx. 58k

Also I leave really close to a stealership or my buddy or was a tech there now lives about 50 miles away (my preferred mech) but I don't think it'll make it out that far

Does it start up again?and what happens if you push the gas pedal? Does that stop it from stalling?

Sounds like a bad ignition coil or spark plug. More likely its the ignition coil.
I don't think the common HPFP issue with the 535's would cause those symptoms..

Yes it does start up again, if I give it gas the engine rev's then drops below idle for a little then dies out.

The car has had the HPFP replaced at around 40k, but I'll see research the ignition coil maybe that could be it.

I had a similar problem. Disconnected the MAF and it idled tons better. It's a simple enough test to disconnect the MAF and see if it changes the behavior. If it improves it somewhat, the next step would be cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner.

At the risk of sounding stupid...what is MAF, my car had the same symptoms yesterday, 2006 525i, it's running fine today and the check engine light has gone.

Also just called the dealership for a quote they quoted me $537.00 + the cost of parts for one coil (+$77.00). Also he recommended I have changed all the coils and spark plugs too (at another cost). Sounds like I'm in for about $800-900 if I go with the dealer.

I learned why they are called "stealerships"

anyone have a recommended guy on Long Island (if my buddy doesn't get back to me?)

I recommend getting it scanned first to see what caused the check engine light and then go from there.
Just a heads up if it's the coils it's a really easy job at least on my N52 engine. I had one go out and just replaced the bad one even though I bought all six.

Mass airflow sensor. It's right on the air intake tube.
