Hi all,

Having a great time. the 550 is way better than i thought it could be. just awesome!!!!!! have kept the revs under 4500 but still managed to easily reach 126 mph. had a C class kompressor on the intial trip from frankfurt to munich. reach about 160 kilometers and this felt fast. in the 5er this seemed like the car was loafing along .

getting lots of looks from everyone here. at least 3 or 4 a day. not many 550 here nor many with the sports package. well, im sure most arent driving around in summer tires and 18s. got stuck in snow for a brief spell yesterday, however, we staying away from snowy areas as best we can. drove thru some slight snow in the swiss alps and the car handled fine with no slipping. but, this was hair raising and we cut short our loop around switz and went to italy.

900 miles lovely miles thus far. towns visited - munich, garmisch, lagano switz, verenna italy, lake como, reutte austria, and we now back munich. ready for much more beer. leave on sunday.
. the V8 power and handling much better than expected. the logic 7 is cool and using the euro nav disk is simply invaluable. im terrible with directions.

ill try to post a pic from here. just havent yet found a usb computer to link my digital camera.

Regards,

CVT Benhogan

Sounds like you are having a great time. I've barely been over 100mph in my 550, but you are right it sure doesn't tax this engine much. Got to love the power and torque.

Nice, we are waiting for pictures.

Sorry I am stealing your thread a bit, but I've a question for our German friends...

I will be in Germany for two weeks starting 7 March. I am puzzled what tires to wear for the trip. I've many kms to do there, at least 4.000 in Germany, but mostly autobahn and cities.

Here in Romania, it was very warm these days for the normal climate in February. Last days it was 15-16 Celsius, whereas normal temperature for this period is close to freezing or below.

I am still on Winter 17", but last year in March, I've had my winter tires and in Germany around Muenchen it was very warm... The result was that one of my winter tires were completely worn out. Prematurely, because driving them at autobahn speeds in 20 degrees celsius is not good.

So my questions are: should I wear my summers 18" or should I leave winter 17"? If I go with summer RFT tires, will I have problems in some areas? Can I drive in Germany with non-RFTs? Someone from BMW Germany told me that E60 are homologated only with RFTs so in case of some incidents I can be guily of replacing RFT with non-RFT. Is this true?

I will be mostly in Muenchen, Regensburg, Karlsruhe, Hannover and Bremen.

Can our German friends help me with some info? And BMW if you see a mystic blau there, just wave me... I will know...

OMG, i suspect that picture was taken in 6th gear right? If so that engine was revved hardly and had alot of work to do to sustain that speed.

Responding to the thread: Nice thing. IT's good to see you enjoy the trip, but why didn't you go for M pack 5er to have even more exclusivity especially when you go back home. And hahaha man you killed me with that line about the navigation directions. Of course...what did you expect, your an american.

I will probably not change my winters and 17"s until the end of March. This will be my first Spring in Germany and I don't really know what the weather will be like.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate your answers. Where are you in Germany? Is it safe to drive now with summers there?
