Heavy Steering

Hi guys I have traded my 2000 audi a6 for a 2005 bmw 530i. IT has the 18" bmw wheels i believe 124's with run flat tires on it. The steering in this car takes a good amount of force to turn the wheel. I had the dealer look at it and they said no codes and they did a power steering flush on it. Is there anything else I can check. The car is driveable but not comfortable becasue of the force you have to use steering with one hand. And Im not a little guy either

may be your car doesn't have active steering? if you car has active steering, this shouldn't be the issue. Most of the BMW's i drove had a heavy steering though. I like when is heavy better btw.

It dosent have active steering I just didnt think it would be that hard though.

yes then it's normal. my e39 5 was really heavy to steer. also i drove few more BMW's and they are like that.
now my e60 has active steering and honestly, i'd rather have a heavy one. when u get used to it you should like it

yea my X5 is reallllly heavy..when i was driving it i got used to and when i switched to the 530 with active steeering it felt alot easier..few days ago i drove the X5 again and it was like steering a ship...it was a good feeling to be used to it so youll begin to like it soon enough IMO

Amazing how clueless people are and they pass bad info on to others.
AS has nothing to do with it. It is the servotronic adaptive powersteering that makes it super light and easy to turn at low speeds and heavier progressivly at high speeds. Basically more help from power steering is at low speeds.
AS changes the ratio so the wheel does not have to be turned as far but has nothing to dow ith how hard it is to turn.
Prior to 06 the 530 did not get servotronic power steering and instead has the old type that is still used in the 3 series. And yes it is very heavy! I have driven many 3 series and especially around tight parking lots you really have to muscle it!
Funny thing is at higher speeds it actually is lighter than mine with servotronic that has the best of both worlds-light at low speed and even heavier at high-amazing feature

MY 2005 530D sport has what I think is overly heavy steering, I recently drove a 2005 SE trimmed 530D and the steering felt lighter.
Maybe the suspension geometry has something to do with it as well.

Get over it your engine, tranny and power steering are all the oldest styles... why so bitter when you can go 97mph in third and I cant..

when I first got my 523 with 17in original rims (225 R50) and original suspension (spring and shocks), my wife drove it and commented that this has active steering or something is inside which is missing in my previous 3er. My previous 3er came with M sport package on day 1 (lowered springs and I guess shocks, 17in 235 R35) and its harder to steer than a liteace pickup commented by my buddy who droves one.
I thought all is fine now, until I swapped the stock springs with H&R lowered, 19in 245R35 275R30 tyres on 166 rims. Now the 3er feeling is back which is good. Doesn't float anymore and more more bicep training. haha
My 523 doesn't come with AS. Just the plain old power steering pump =)
