I've read the manual and spent considerable time just playing with the system and still cant say that I understand how it works. Can some one dumb it down for me? Thanks

Just follow these instructions and you'll have it working in no time flat:

Just trying to get to a comfortable temp for the driver and the passenger as well as get heat to the back seat. If I blow cold air out of the mid level vents, it blows too much cold air out of the rear vents. Is it possible to blow cool air out of the mid level vents on one side and warmer air on the other? Does the auto function use the personal settings? That is just a quick list. I'd be interested to know if others have questions, too. Thanks

It's an unnecessarily complex setup  It forces you to look at the screen to fine tune the temp, taking the driver's attention away from the road.

I wouldn't necessarily call it "complex," but it is a pain to have to go to Idrive everytime I want to change the temperature for the dashboard vents when the old wheel system in the E46 was just fine. Surprisingly, they have that wheel for the backseat vents.

Once the ventilation preferences are set in IDrive I use the dial to set temps where I feel comfortable and set the system on "AUTO"!

Our ambient temps have swung from the mid-90's to the low 20's during the past 6 months. And except for a few times this Winter I used the defrost and deice buttons to clear front and rear windows I let the system do it's thing.

Should I want it cooler or warmer for me or passenger it's a simple adjustment of the dashboard dial. I think it's pretty simple once the IDrive settings are to your liking.

How do get heat to flow from the defroster vent and the floor vent at the same time?

Use the "Individual Settings" position and then set the upper (defrsot) vents, middle (dash), and bottom (floor) for whatever you want.

I too agree that it is overly complicated. Note that the red/blue bars in iDrive do not affect the floor vents...if the bars are set to all blue (cold) then you can still get hot air on your feet by setting the temperature knob to hot (fully clockwise).

That works for me also.
