Hi All
Since I first got my UK spec 520 it has had a noise coming from the heater unit which is like a humming pulsing sound as if a valve is constantly opening and shutting. This only lasts about 3 or 4 miles or until the car warms up. It is more noticeable when you come to a halt ie,traffic lights when there is no road noise etc,. I spoke to the dealer soon after buying the car and was told this is normal and is supposed to help the car heat up quicker ???. If I switch the heater of it stops. This is not a major problem but I just wondered if anyone else has had this and is it indeed normal for this car.

Mine does that. It's supposedly an auxiliary electric water pump for the heating system. Mine gets worse once it warms up in the winter. I had them replace the pump, but it still does it. So I guess it is "normal." It can be quite loud. Passengers have asked what the sound is.

Unfortunately, most things on an e60 seem to make some sort of noise, some good and some not so good.

My Ride: Collected Sept 2009 - BMW E90 M3, Silverstone II, Novillo Black leather, 19" M Double-Spoke alloys, High Beam Assist, Electronic Damper Control, Voice Control, PDC, USB, DAB, High Gloss Shadowline, Sliding armrest, Trim Finishing in aluminium grey.
I had an E60 520i and there was a pulsing sound when the a/c was on.
Probably the same as your own. However, it lasted for the whole duration the a/c was switched on irrespective of temperature settings.
I have a 523i now and haven't noticed it on it.
