After I turn it off and pull it back I can't find way to put it back inside. Lights work properly.

Knob is alive?

It's a safety thing. Push in for safety (keep knees from hitting it). Mine works in or out; can continue to select left or right in either mode.

No way I can push it in again. I'll try harder.

i wondered this actually.

i took the car in for a service and pre service the thing was pushed in...when i got it back it was popped out which totally fazed me for a minute. i couldnt remember whether i had imagined it stuck in or not. so i used some ingenuity (read:brute force) and pushed it back in. then thought 'why do i have it in. its easy to grab with gloves when its out.

i then thought ' i should check on e60.net whether im breaking the car by doing this'

then forgot

The push-in knob is an extra cost option in most markets. Believe it is standard on UK spec models though

I've been on this site for sometime now but never had reasons to reply to all the chats that takes place, but that one is a must....laugh
I accidentally hit the light swicth with my head one day, and within a split second I pulled it back out. When It happen I was like oh shit I broke it, but when I pulled it back out and realize that it was still working, I said...oh well. I often wondered if it was made to go in and out, but I was too enbarrased to read the manual or ask the dealer....lol

I for one still don't get it. Does the headlight switch on the US 545i push in and pull out?--and for safety?--what kind of safety?--so no one hits his or head on it???? If I was close enough to the dash for my knees to hit it, then my head woudl be sticking through my steering wheel (slight exaggeration, but ...) Mine always has been out. I tried briefly to push it in. It did not budge. I quess I could try a hammer.
