I was trying to lock my e60. Then I pushed the lock button. I am not sure which other buttons I pushed. Don't know which button or combination of buttons on the remote key that cause the headlight switch to sunk in. I was shocked. When I went into the car, I wanted to switch on the headlight, found that the switch is flushed in. I got to pull the switch out in order to turn on the headlight. Anyone of you encounter this? What is the purpose of this?

You can try to use your knee to do it. If you can, I would say you are superb. I checked with my local bmw agent, they say the switch will sink in only when there is an accident. They read the manufacturer's manual(for agent only). It could be the software bug that trigger that.

It actually happened to me 3 or 4 times!!!
First time a was surprised too because i didnt felt when i knocked it in.

This is really fascinating - the switch going in thing. I think BMW puts too much AI into the car so much so that the car now has a mind of its own and starts to become mischievious! :D

after reading this...i went n pushed it in! yup it went in...but i cud pull it out after that. not sure if its controlled by the remote...feels like a plastic catch thingy...feels cheap alright!

I read the BMW Service training manuals and they mention that to avoid knee injuries in a crash, they consciously designed the switch assembly to slide into the car with minimal force. They mention that it should be easy to re-place the switch assembly in it proper position.

Huh? how come now can push in? toto, you use brute force? I tried mine...it couldn't. I remember I locked the car and it happened.

as i wrote in the other thread.. i have the same questions/ experience.. one day after servicing the car at pml i got a shock when try to switch the light as the knob got retracted. I called the CSA and asked what they did.. No clue.
Saw a 520i in the show room and the knob also retracted as well.
anyway one day I experimented and found that the know is not mechanisesd I think. I lightly punched it with edge of my hand. Pops! it goes in!
I would be surprised if the knob is somewhat mechanised.
