well, I didnt read everything, but when I saw the post that said the lights aren't tied into the suspension, then how do they know when to autolevel? BTW, be careful with the auto level system, the system that is tied into the suspension on Audi's is pretty sensitive and expensive for stupid little parts.

As far as adjusting them, have it done by a tech, don't bother trying to align them yourself. It's only $40 from the dealer. They don't do it manually, they just plug in and adjust which is the correct way to have it done.

At first I was thinking that the lights had an internal or external sensor (like a mercury switch or something) that would detect when the car was level, inclined, etc. I'm sure there are a few ways to accomplish the vertical adjustments. As far as the adaptive lights, clearly they're tied to the steering system.

Good advice about having a technician adjust the lights. These things are so precise that adjusting them isn't something you do by trial and error...

Took about 30 seconds and one full turn of the screw driver and all is back to normal..... love this forum!

So I had the dealer readjust the level sensor the other day, but the left side still seems a bit low. The right side is fine. Based on Rudy's fantastic PDF instructions (thank yolu Rudy), I'm going to give the screws a shot for the vertical adjustment and see what happens. If it doesn't work out, I'm going to take it back to the dealer and have them reset. However, $40 seems like a pretty cheap charge for this. Is this a standard BMW charge for this adjustment or are they going to try and charge me the "hourly" rate, which is around $110.

Be careful -- the left side is usually lower than the right (on left-hand drive cars) so that you don't blind oncoming traffic. Obviously, without seeing your car, I can't tell if what you're seeing now is normal or not so just be careful you don't end up adjusting things and then blinding people...

Hahahaha! Good point! What's crazy is that I can't remember where the line of light was drawn, in terms of how far in front of the car it used to go, before I had the work done. It's definitely a lot better. But it's very noticeable, in terms of the right being higher than the left. I don't recall it being that much of a difference. Maybe it's fine and I'm just being paranoid. All the streets near my house have lights on the road. I need to find a road that has no lights, so I can truly see what my visibilty is like.

Most dealerships have NO way to "officially" aim headlights. When I lowered my car, I called 2 diff dealerships and both just pull the car up to a blank wall and "eyeball" it. I asked both what they do when they replace headlights, and they said they are usually pre-aimed by the factory and don't aim them at all...just install them.

That's why I said it's easier to just find another E60 that you know is aimed right, and mark the spot, or do it prior to the drop.
