I hate those damn sand trucks running around the LA area. My headlights, windshield and the hood are now chipped all over the place. Just impossible to avoid them.
Just like Finland in the winter but much colder overhere

If one polishes the headlight, he needs to do it often. Polishing is merely a process of converting big scratch into small scatches. It'll look dull over the time, so repolish is needed.
It's only get best up to certain point. Look closely you'll see millions of small swirl scratches on a polished lense.

One word: Money
I have to say they are making these lenses with a little better quality. I remember when the E36 came out and the lenses were crap, it always faded and dirt got in easily. But I believe you can take out those lenses easily back then and clean them.

I doubt they make any profits making them not-changeable since i think there are very few people that change the entire headlight just for a scratched or slightly chiped lense. So? Maybe costs? I doubt that also, that bmw can't afford or thinks it's not worth it, going through the process of making them changeable. So the only money i see is on the income for bmw, the income they would make from those that would actually change them once every while (supposing they would not cost very much)

Another related problem and not I don't mean to hijack the thread but I have dirt inside my headlight (Some dust and small debris) between the lenses and the bulb... I noticed a couple of days ago and got me so pissed off. I mean, I know they are not supposed to be totally airtight sealed but to let dirt go in?

were the bulbs ever changed? Dirt on the back side of the carrier area could easily get knocked in while the bulb is being fitted.
