Just tried out a Head-Up-Display app for Android called Speedview (by Code Sector). This was the free version. All you need is an Android phone with GPS (probably all of them I would imagine have it). Start the app, select HUD mode and place it somewhere that it'll reflect of the windshield. I put it on the top of the dash with a rubber non-slip mat underneath. When it transitions from 0-29mph to 30mph, a little message appears (as you'll see on the video). I don't know what that was for.
I think it's pretty cool and worked really well at night. I haven't tried it in daylight. Yes, I intentionally put it in MPH mode.
There's bound to be an iPhone version too.

You have the option to have it viewed as standard or mirrored view. Of course in the daylight without any coating on the windshield it would be harder to see.

I just got back in from trying it. It works pretty damn good. Would be better if I had something good to keep the phone stationary if i bust a hard left/right
