Xenons are optional on the E60 here in the US.? If they're optional here, they're most likely optional everywhere else...

They are "standard" in Canada - meaning we have to pay for them not that they are thrown-in for the same price.? We just don't have a choice - don't know why.

Just curious. Over the past year looking at this board, I just realized there were no members from France that I can remember. I know I saw some, but they are few. Begs the question what is distribution of members by country?

Most are not able and on top of that, many are not willing.
We keep teasing the French with that, no offence
Distribution of members, great idea, but no clue how to find out. Perhaps any hidden statistics?

A good friend of mine who is French told me a joke a while ago. "How many French does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: One! He holds the bulb while the whole world spins around him..." Very true...

I am French
Regarding the headlight question: the situation was very poore and complexe some years ago in France.
Up the the mid 80's, the French cars were equiped with yellow bulbs: less efficient except in smog but also less tiring for the eyes. The French were not used to white bulbs. They converted to white bulbs due to EU regulations.
The maintenance of the cars and especially lightning was very poor due to complete lack of automotive inspection up to the mid 90's. Since, the situation improved a lot.
On top, Xenon lights were prohibited for a year of 2 by the French administration (who is alway late by one war!) when the system was invented. Finally, they authorised it...
Regarding the city and lights in the very past: they were using only the parking lights (sorry, I do not know the translation: first position on the switch). Now, by law you have to use low beam.
Conclusion: you can now drive in France a car equiped with Xenon without being ennoyed.
The only remaining problem is this autophobic attitude of the governement wich reflects to the police regarding the speed limits and drinking and driving. It is by far even more enforced than in the US in such a way that is realy stupid.
