My windshield is fine at speeds of 180kpm+ but at times I wonder if my sunroof is closed tight since at times I will hear a slight sound from that area---this is with the glass closed only.

Also, sometimes the doors seem to be not as airtight but I think that's just my head and not actual seal problems.

Or maybe the whistle you are experiencing is from a 'leak' from within the front instrument compartment to the outside....?

When I take my car between 130-150mph, I get this sound of a whistle or wind noise that sounds like its coming through the iDrive screen. I was on M5Board recently and a bunch of members experienced similar problems and said it was due to a faulty mounted windshield from the factory. They were replaced and the sound was gone, but some had to pay for the new windshield.

I went to the dealer and they obviously told me that because they couldn't replicate the sound since they're not allowed to take my car that fast (Hahahahaha!), they have no way of justifying that as a replacement issue.

Has anyone experienced this sound in their E60? If so, did you have the windshield replaced? What did the dealer say?
Back to your original question, to be quite honest, I think congratulations are in order since I think you're the first person to ever experience this phenomenon...

...then again, I could be mistaken.

It'll be kinda hard to go 130 in NYC. Couple nights ago at 145, i didnt hear it though. Or mebbe I was hearing Alex's slk55 engine and my friend's M3 more. Tell the guy u'll replicate it and u'll drive slow and scare the hell outta the technician. Then they'll replace it

This is a known issue in the German BMW forums and its simply down to how the windshield is glued. Its alledgidly also a known issue at BMW, but probably more so over in Germany where its common for the cars to be driven at those speeds. Therefore, if your dealer put a questions into BMW HQ in Munich, they should know about this issue. (Its also often caused by other companies putting in replacement windshields and then not sealing them sufficiently)

I just did a search on a German forum and this is a translation of an explanation given on how it is fixed and why:
In order to eliminate this noise, BMW glues/seals the upper part of the window frame, so that the wind, which travels along the side parts of the window frame does not escape between the roof and rubber seals into the car.

It should however, be a durable sealant and no glue, because otherwise the problems will inevitable occur at the next windshield change

In other words, BMW needs to make sure the seals around your window are really air tight, especially at the top of the window where the air gets forced up to as it flows over the windshield and window frames.

This is exactly what I needed to know. Thanks! I'm going to take the car to my dealer today and see what they say. Thanks again!
