Are there any positives? I can't think of any.

Don't be so negative DD :-)

The negative is the 6th gear (that becomes shorter) and the fact you cannot make short just second, third and fourth gear but just all.
I think on 6 MT you could mod just some gears, but I'm afraid it wouldn't be an easy job

You will gain acceleration and performance overall (2.93 gives too long gears, it's not its right ratio imho*)
Because of your negative points, I got just -7% and not -16%.

I was resigned to 3.23 (-10/11 %), when I found -7 at diffsonline

from factory the car is set to be a confortable and not thirsty car, not as a 645ci.

you are very correct in saying modding individual gears would be extremely costly.

Thanks for the clarification(s). I knew all about the theoretical (ok actual) benefits, but not really for 6th gear. Who's wanting to get more torque out of 6th gear only? I tend to use 6th only for cruising rather than accelerating and therefore want it to be lower revs. If I'm hard on the gas pedal then it'll change down to 4th or 5th automatically and won't change up until over 150mph anyway.

Still a bit (ok a lot) confused about how you see the benefit of this in everyday driving. If you're "giving it some" then you won't be in 6th gear unless you've taken the top speed limiter off.

there is NO BENEFIT to going up numerically for daily driving. it is strictly for increased acceleration. if you drive hard and want a quicker car, then there is a benifit

In 6th gear? Only between 150mph and 180mph, because 5th gear takes you all the way to around 150mph (check the vid in my sig).

By final-drive ratio, we are talking about 6th gear aren't we? Or have I grabbed the wrong end of the ballpark ?

Never had 4 people on board + luggages + etc + slopes?

but not really for 6th gear.
We all would like a 350 kmh/220 mph 6th gear, but unfortunately it isn't possible.

Stock 6 MT/SMG 545i with 2.93 seems slow in many situations: with (kmh) 70-120-175-240-280-320 gears are TOO long (more than M5, for example, that has 500 HP).
Maybe suitable for the same engine supercharged or a V12, but in my opinion a 175 kmh third and a 240 kmh fourth are too long for this engine.

The acceleration should be faster off the line and through all the gears.

I think what he's saying about 6th is that instead of it being a weak overdrive type gear it will now have some balls.

By "final drive" i mean the rear differential.

Now we're talking. A friend and I did that on a crappy Ford Escort back in the 80s when we were teenagers.

Simple terminology misunderstanding. I would have got "changing the diff ratio" right away

Oh, so I have misunderstood what's meant by final drive ratio then. If all gears are affected then it makes total sense to do it for performance reasons. I was thinking final drive was referring to top gear ratio only. You can see how that would make no sense.

good. everyone is on the same page now and has the right idea. my buddy in HS changed his bone stock 87 mustang from 3.08s (standard on a 5 speed, autos came with 2.73s to compensate for the 1 less gear in the tranny) anyways.... he put 4.10s in there and the accelation was neck snapping. car topped out at 85 though

Quick Reply: Has anyone changed final drive on manual 545 or 550?
