Mine does not sound like a howl. It sounds like metal or plastic knocking/clanking together.

The sound is actually caused by incorrectly installed foam sealing around the rear deck. When I told my service guy about it he asked me if it sounded like squeaking styrofoam. That was exactly the sound. They ripped it apart, reinstalled the material properly and voila no more squeak.

That sounds like a very reasonable explanation for the phenomenon. I'll remember. Thanks.

My pleasure. This forum has helped solve a number of problems that I've had, so its the least I can do to pass on some help to others from time to time. I just had the tires replaced under the recall notice and frankly its now the best driving car I've owned in thirty years of driving BMWs.

I'm about to take my 04 545 in for the 5th time (BMW North Scottsdale) to get it worked on. It keeps coming back and they don't seem to know how to fix it.

Any solutions would be much appreciated.
I have this (small) problem also and I have located it the the rear-split-fold-down-seats.

It occures only whilst driving on stone roads downtown Helsinki.

BTW, How do you like BMW North Scottsdale?
Extremely well. You go there, right?

I have gone there for one service visit. I have to say that I am pleased with the experience compared to the one I had at Chapman. I really felt as if they saw me as second rate when I was greeted and even purchasing parts at Chapman. In any regard, I will give it some time before I say that I am satified with their service completely at BMWNS.

Welcome to the squeak and rattle club. My 545 has been in 4 times at North Scottsdale for door panels, rear shelf, etc. While problem went away for several months, now with cooler weather, the squeaks/rattles are back with a vengenance. I've had good experience with NS, though. Seems like this issue is more to do with quality control than dealer. I've had it with my car, given that my prior 5 BMW's were tight as drums while this one is like an old creaking ship.

I had a similar noise and tracked it down to the back seat middle arm rest. I wrapped some velcro around the metal post that the latch contacts and it is quiet. I have fold down seats but I would think the latch mechanism is the same.
