My Ride: 535D Sport Auto
I was reading a UK car mag earlier with a test on the new A6 Avant v BMW 525d E61 and was amazed to see the A6 take the honours mainly due to the hard ride of the BMW and the fact that buyers in this class don't want handling over comfort. BMW historically has always built excellent drivers cars with a great mix of handling and comfort, until IMHO when the E60 arrived. Yes I know we can have the std 16" wheels/non RF tyres and the ride/handling is there. But we all want big wheels and sports suspension! SO why don't BMW put dampers to absorb the bumps on the driver and passengers seats with up/down movement only no sideways movement. The result would be a great handling car, big wheels, sports suspension and one hell of a confortable ride. It would be cheaper than adjustable suspension and could be mechanically locked out if required. Even my office chair has optional lean back mode and that only cost ?100.

Aren't the Run-Flat tires the culprit here? They are more harsh on the ride.
I know that people who switched to real tires, ie Michelin, have reported far superior ride comfort.

With regard to the steering wheel it could damped too and be in sync with the seat movement.
Subterfuse
I have switched from R/F to Non RF but with 19" wheels the ride is still hard just not as hard. Sometimes I would love a really soft limo ride when driving in slow traffic over rough UK road surfaces in a straight line. Thats all

Audi, what's that
relative of MB
they all copy BMW now in A6 you have a thing like Idrive knob, PDC even in their new Skoda.
For the ride, I have the sport suspension now only w 17" RFT but it is not harsh nor uncomfortable, here we have $hit roads, and never had a problem not even w a bump on the road.
Next year I am putting 20"s , I tried and it was almost the same.
BMW rulez!!!

I changed to 19" Michelin PS2's & the ride is definitely better.
I agree with Merv though that it would be nice on certain occasions to move the suspension bias towards limo like comfort.
This is why l have for a long time said that what is really missing from the E60 is EDC.
lt was available on the E39 & it is on the M5, so why the hell not on our E60's??

Anyways, I believe the seats are somewhat tuned to the car, Not necessarily with shock absorbers mind.
Re the wheel/tyres - the best way to a woeful ride - Sport suspension AND run-flat tyres. Unless you live somewhere where every road is as smooth as a baby's ar$e.

Interesting idea, but you said it yourself......"BMW historically has always built excellent drivers cars with a great mix of handling and comfort,.....". If they now put dampers on the seats, it would defeat the whole purpose of the BMW.
Besides, it would increase the number of parts now required to make the car (which in turn increases cost and failures) , whereas the same can be achived by calibrating the suspension.
Just my opinion.
