Default handbrake light won't turn on

Hello,

Today I noticed that the handbrake light on the dash comes on only when starting the car then goes off even that the handbrake is applied. I also tried moving the car while applied and no warning came on. So the car doesn't recognise if the handbrake is applied or not. Any thoughts on this? Could you please help me solve it?

Peace

could it possibly be a sticking plunger switch? try moving the brake lever up and down fast, while holding the release button in, to see if that frees it up.

Thanks turboawd. I tried it but no use. Maybe the switch is stuck or its cable is disconnected. Will have to dig in.

This is a part common to many BMW's:

I had a problem where it was the opposite, the light was always on. To fix I just manually bent the switch back within limits. Knowing the switch, I think you just need to adjust the position, its such an inexpensive part that for you it might be easier to just replace it because you have to remove the center console to get to it.

Here is a write up about removing R&R blower motor, it has a section explaining how to remove the center console.

Follow the steps all the way pages 1-9, keep in mind this is for a Pre- LCI car, if you have a LCI the area around the ash tray will be different.

Thank you so much guys. The switch you told me about was stuck. I reached it from the gaiter and freed it, handbrake light is there on the dash!

Thanks again I'm really greatful.
