I had a similar experience. I got a nail puncture in one of my runflats and my dealer told me they could not repair it per BMW policy. After a little prodding the service tech conceded that a plug might take care of the problem, but that he couldn't do it for me because of instructions from some higher authority. He kind of while he said this - conveying the message that a simple plug would work for me. I'd tell you who the dealer was, but I like the guy because of his honesty and I wouldn't want to get him in trouble.

I went to the local Midas shop and got a $5 (US) plug and there have been no problems for about 4000 miles. The dealer was going to charge me $384 (US) for a new tire.

I am not sure whether the run-flat tyre could be repaired. Moreover how can I put my family at risk by taking it to an independant repair guy when the BMW service centre advises replacement. I feel this is similar to the garage informing us the brake pads are worn out and needs replacing whenever the car is sent for a service - How would we know the pads or the lining are worn or not. I have been searching the web re: the price of my tyre and I found two mobile services offering the same tyres with fitting for around ?210/- and hence am feeling a bit calmer in that I have not been taken for a ride (at least not too far) given the fact it has been carried out by 'BMW'

I do not know what kind it was and all I was told it needed to be replaced. Can I ask who your dealer is?

Yep, welcome to "Rip off Britain" everybody. ?260 for an tyre on an 18" rim from the main dealer and no haggling sounds about right.

My 225/50 17" run-flat replacement cost ?200, although I have subsequently found them at ?175.

Although these run-flats have negative qualities we should not underestimate the safety gains from this technology.

My puncture occured on the motorway and the only indication I had that there was a problem has the warning in i-drive. In fact, I thought the pressure monitor was malfunctioning as there was absolutely no feeling that I had got a nail in the tyre.

Further to this I was able to drive approximately 400 more miles at motorway sppeds before having the tyre replaced. Sadly repair was not an option for me either.

When I had a nail in my RFT, the dealer said no problem to have it repaired.
I wanted a mushroom repair from the inside bu the tyre shop's equipment was not strong enough to get the tyre off the rim so I settled for a plug.
