Sadly to say the concept of Diesels really suck in the US. The end cost for the car it a lot more, and you pay dearly for the fuel! E.G. A few days ago, regular was 3.08 and diesel was 3.94! There goes any savings you thought you were getting...

It's nowhere near as clear cut as the pro diesel camp would want to believe. I think diesel is more expensive than petrol in the UK too. Add to that a more on-the-edge engine (adding two turbos, swirl flaps, particle filters etc) results in a higher risk of expensive repairs. The fact that the car will cost more, the car tax I believe costs more, the fuel costs more (except in Germany), and the best fuel economy comes when the car is running warm/hot.
You need to weigh up the number of miles you're going to be driving and therefore the amount of fuel you'd be buying, and factor that into the purchase while comparing the price of the diesel car vs a similar spec petrol car. I only drive 9,000 miles a year, so I'd have trouble getting a diesel to pay for itself. Plus, living in Germany with the autobahns, I'd be disappointed with the diesel's lack of power above about 80mph. A 535d takes about twice as long to get from 80mph to 150mph than a 545i does. From 10mph to 40mph there's very little in it, but up high the difference is huge.
