So, bought my e60 about 6 months ago.

Averaged 42mpg over a tankful over the summer months. Noticed it dropped to 38mpg in the last two months, but put that down to the colder weather. Then I saw a swarm of people complaining about their operating temperatures only being around 65-70 degrees. Checked out my operating temperatures and it was only 75 degrees even after a long motorway run.

Decided to change EGR thermostat as it only needed an hour to do. Boom, operating temperature instantly increased to 83, me happy. Combined MPG still stayed around 38 though, still thought it was the colder weather. Then, a couple of weeks later, the MPG suddenly shot up, and I was now doing 47+ MPG, even at 80mph! For a few days I was bemused and thought maybe I was going downhill a lot, or maybe the wind was blowing in my favour. But then, it HIT me! I realised just a few days before the MPG shot up, the car did a regen. And then I realised it probably hadn't done a regen in 3-4 months, since the summer and that slowly the DPF must have been clogging up.

BUT, it doesn't stop there!
That 47MPG figure was a combination of the older figures when the car was still doing 38MPG.

So, the time came to fill up the tank. I brimmed it and reset both on board computers. The results? Well, see for yourself:






The left hand computer are the figures that were obtained after joining the motorway and resetting it. The right hand computer are the figures I got after resetting it when fueling up in town and not touching it at all. Those figures were after 15 miles of town driving and 55 motorway miles. Still, 61mpg is pretty impressive.

Before, I'd get an estimated range of 500-600 miles, now I have 891 miles!



In hindsight, I've always managed to outdo the manufacturers stated mpg figures, and once again, this car is no longer an exception! Boom!

 

This is like triple what I get!

 

Short distance mpg is no guide at all, come back after 1000 miles and tell us your average.

 

Is this a diesel or something? How are you getting 70 miles to the gallon? It's hard for me to ever get over an average of 27 mpg here in the U.S.

 

lol, +1. I'm getting 18 mpg with mostly highway miles and very little "spirited" driving.

 

DPF regen is really important. It's one of the reasons my BMW dealer suggested I don't get a diesel, because my driving patterns (rarely driving more than half an hour) would not only mean problems with the DPF, but also because diesels need to get up to temp to be their most efficient. Driving only about 8-9,000 miles a year, and mostly short trips, the diesel benefits don't kick in.

 

American's are so cute some times. Ignorance is bliss.

 

Sorry for my ignorance. Maybe you could enlighten us cute Americans as to how we can achieve 70 mpg.

 

I wish I was getting 70 mpg... I think I'm getting around 25 mpg with some spirited driving. I just got the RPi exhaust installed on the car. I wonder how its going to affect my mpg.

 

I have a feeling I wouldn't want to get stuck behind sanjsanj on the road.
