I have Navigation Proffesional with a DVD that covers many countries in Europe including Norway where I live. When I used this system in Germany (where I purchased the car) I had no problems at all with the system.
Returning to Norway I noticed that in several places I get the message "Guidance not possible" - and the guidance stops - at least the lady stops to talk. It seems quite stupid because the places where I get these messages are places included in the map - and in streets that are possible to find in the list.
I first believed when this message appeared that I had lost contact with the satelites. That can not be the case because I get the message at exactly the same places every time (turning from the main road and in to the more quiet roads where I live).
Does anyone have an explanation for this?

The only times that this has happened to me was when I was out in the wilderness. Although the road was paved, I don't recall wether or not it appeared on the map. I think it is just a data limitation, i.e. no linkage between GPS and the map.

Norwey is full of oil (on the sea) and deserts (and mountains).
They just do not want to invest in MW links or mapps, the money is there!
Sorry Bruggern
Glad somebody else brought this up. I live in a pretty heavily populated area and get the guidance not possible message as well - even though the roads are shown on the navigation...it appears that this happens on roads that are blue tinted versus the orangeish tinted roads.
No idea what's going on. Just figured it was yet another deficiency in the BMW navigation package.

I have this happen - but for me I think it is a satellite issue. I could not get direction in downtown Asheville, NC on repeated days. It is in the mountains but only 4000 feet and not very tall buildings. I was just in Charlotte (north - Lake Norman) and I kept getting that message. Thankfully the car could still figure out what road I was on - it just wouldn't tell me what to do. It was overcast. Everytime I restarted my car - I got guidance again - like it reestablished connection...
I have had the experience on new rural roads also.
So I think 2 different thinks happen - lose connection with satellite or don't have roads on the map....

I believe it's a map data issue. From what I've seen on both my BMW and Honda, certain (mostly rural) areas are not fully digitized. The road location may be on the map but the additional layers of data like whether the road is one-way, etc. isn't complete. Don't blame BMW, blame NavTeq.
In other words, the car is showing you the roads because that's all it has available to you. I can't guide you on those roads because it doesn't have enough information about those roads to accurately tell you what to do...
