Yep.

Just on full turns on the very end and on very low speeds.
my symptoms are same. This groan occured on my 545i and on my new 550i. Just had her in to dealer and they could not replicate.

glad the forum is zeroing in on this nuisance that dealer hasnt isolated.

Double posting on two threads but people seem to be reading this one only. My post was:

I have the same problem and my friend who is a master technician at BMW said it just needed a ?15 ($30) bottle of additives added to the steering fluid reservoir.

Not sure if that?s what they have already done but I will be popping in to see him soon to get it added.

It only happens when the engine is hot, this is the case on my 530.

It can happen when the engine is cold too... But this is rare...

I had it once when cold.

I'm told the additive will sort it, but without having it done i can't say for sure!!! Best bet is TELL bmw to do it, don't let them mess you around.

I told my service manager about the additive on Friday. He didn't know anything about it. But that doesn't surprise me.

I didn't told him, but I know he really tried to find a solution and, as I said, even BMW HQ Munich was involved...
I will ask him again the next time I'm there...

It is not uncommon to have groaning comming from the stearing when you have a car on full lock. I have been experiencing that since my first car. some cars it is more pronounced than others.

True, but when it sounds like you are honking your horn there's something wrong!

Yeah, mine sounded like a truck slamming on its air brake, LOUD!....not a constant, dull noise of a pump straining.
