My Ride: E46 330, E60 550 on order: Carbon Black/Natural Brown, 6MT.
I picked up my 550 at the Welt yesterday. What a fantastic experience.
I'll post more information and driving experiences when I have a more reliable (and cheaper) internet connection.
Here are some pictures of the car, however.

Speaking of gears, the shifter is supurb, and the clutch has far less travel than my E46, and a more consistent pickup point. Once the SAT (sentient automatic transmission - a.k.a. yours truly) better learns the shift points, It will be just as rewarding as my E46 is. The torque is incredible. I delivered a jerky to my hapless traveling companions few times by downshifting too far when I needed acceleration. I quickly learned to jump down one gear where the 330 would need two.
Weather and temperature permitting (it has summer tires, and it is a bit chilly here) I'll get more autobahn time tomorrow and report back more.

Yesterday, we drove to F?ssen. There was not much autobahn time, as the nav only had us on the A95 for about 20km, and only half of that had no limit. I did take it up to 160km/h in this stretch. It wants to go faster. The rest of the drive was on B roads, with a no-center-line road full of switchbacks going over a good size hill. The ARS is spectacular. While it doesn't have the tossable character of my E46 330, it happily took every corner I threw at it as well as the 330, while having a much more comfortable and compliant ride. The engine is subdued until you hit the gas. It is so quiet I kept finding myself in the wrong gear.
