Runflats are a compromise. I have them on my C6 Corvette and I surely want the ability to nurse that car back home if I get a flat in some remote area. But that security comes at a cost.

And if you haven't noticed, the M5 does not come with thumpflats.

sounds like it's worthwhile getting rid of the runflats. so, what needs changing? just the tires or this also include changing the standard rims (ie: new rims with non runflats)? any recommendations for the 525? cheers

" The PS2's are much smoother riding and although the handling is "different", I think it is at least as good as what I had with the runflats."

how is the handling different? Does the car move around more in corners with the PS2s? I took off the 18s with run flats before delivery and installed 19 inch 166 M5 wheels with PS2s (245/285). The car wanders over rough pavement and moves around a bit when going more than 8/10ths in a corner. I'm just curious if the run flats (which the suspension was designed for) offered firmer, more no nonsense handling irrespective of ride quality - which every comment seems to focus on.

thanks,
DRP

^the runflats offer better steering response and initial turn-in.

No need to change rims, they will accept non-run flat tires as well.

I have replaced my RF's to PS2's as well, and am extremely happy with them except I notice some steering wheel movement while accelerating through tight corners. Could it be that I need an alignment after only 20k miles? I did not notice this with my Dunlop RF's...

I think that turn-in is a bit slower, but so far I haven't noticed much else, however, I haven't had a chance to push it. I suspect the RF's are slightly stiffer laterally and therfore more responsive, but then once you get used to any lateral "slop" in the ps2's, it shouldn't matter and it is likely very minor in any case. Driving on RF's is like driving on wooden wheels (to quote another member) as far as I am concerned.

I'm a bit confused by your post. Did you replace the standard runflats with non-runflats, or did your car come with 19" runflats that were smoother than those on your 545?

Question for those who have replaced their runflats. Is the temporary spare that the Sport model have satisfactory if you do get a flat?

Lou
I've had a set of Bridgstone Blizzaks since I purchased my 05' 530i. I switch them with my summer vrederstein tires in the winter. The Blizzaks are great and I live in the northeast where you can get snow and ice. I've never had a problem. However, I have read some posts complaining about DCS. Folks use a little common sense. This is not a 4X4! I don't take the Mach 5 out in really bad whether. Temper your judgements in the use of this vehicle with the weather. Again, the Blizzaks are great and they are not studded! I've seen the posts on whether or not to get studs. That all depends on where you are located, what type of whether you've got, how quickly the roads are cleaned, and whether you want your 5 to be out in this stuff to begin with. I know BMW has made the Xi. Still the Blizzaks run well in slush, snow (up to 5 inches, freezing rain during the winter months. I constantly drive between D.C. and N.Y.
